Online One to One Tuition
Here is an overview about what online one to one tuition is, why it is effective and what to expect from our sessions.
Who?
Pupils I have tutored in the past have been:
-
Primary age (Years 4 to 6)
-
Secondary School age pupils (Years 7 to 11)
-
GCSE pupils (Higher and Foundation)
-
Adult learners looking to improve skills or study towards a qualification
So anyone can benefit from online maths tuition.
Why is Tutoring beneficial?
The Education Endowment Fund (EEF) are a charity that study the effectiveness of strategies to help pupils improve their academic performance.
They have stated "Evidence indicates that one to one tuition can be effective, delivering approximately five additional months’ progress on average."
Tutoring is more effective when delivered by a qualified teacher (which I am) and delivered in short regular sessions. They recommend half hour sessions a few times a week, however, I tend to find weekly one hour sessions just as effective.
Tutoring is most effective when used as a supplement to the teaching that is going on during the week. So using tutoring as an opportunity to consolidate what has been learnt in school that week and then stretch that learning beyond the classroom can be highly effective.
Why Online?
The benefits to online tuition are many.
The software I use (Bramble) is essentially an online whiteboard that both pupil and I can work on together as if we are sat next to each other.
Tutoring online means that location is not an issue. (I am currently based in Durham and have tutored people all over the UK).
Tutoring online also means that we have the internet as a resource library. As a teacher for many years, not only do I have expereince of how best to teach topics, but I also have memberships and access to many resource websites that the general public can't access to find resources. (I also know which resources are good).
This allows me to have the flexibility to stretch the pupils knowledge by introducing other topics or more difficult content quickly rather than being restricted by only one textbook or worksheet if we were face to face.
What is Bramble?
Our online tutoring sessions all take place on specially designed tutoring software called Bramble.
Bramble is an easy to use and interactive tutoring tool. Essentially, it is an online whiteboard where both the student and I can work simultaneously alongside one another as if we were sitting next to each other.
At the end of the session Bramble will send you PDF copies of the work we have covered during the lesson to help revise the topics again in the future.
Bramble also record the session in full so if the notes are not enough to revise from you can go review the lesson again, go to the part where we were discussing the topic and listen to the explanations again!
After our first session you will need to create a free account with Bramble in order to access the lesson library and all the benefits of Bramble. All you would need is an email address. Don't worry, I'llexplain everything when you get in touch.

How long?
Weekly one hour sessions are most popular.
However, I can be as flexible as my availability allows. If you find you'd rather have two 30 minute sessions per week, or 2 one hour sessions a week then if I have the availability I will do my best to fit to your preferences.
What does a session look like?
A 'normal' session will look different from pupil to pupil.
If they are primary age we could spend time consolidating what has been covered in school that week. Or focussing on building key skills, or prepping for SATs papers.
For secondary school pupils sessions could focus on consolidation or could be used to stretch and challenge based on the topics they've covered in shool that week It could be an opportunity to look at a different topic completely, to get a head start on topics that are due to be taught in the coming weeks.
Exam age pupils could spend more time looking at exam questions, focussing on accessing questions and exam technique as well as consolidation of topics.
Essentially, what a session looks like will depend on what will be most effective to help the pupil progress at that time.

How is payment made?
Monthly invoices. Invoices are created in Bramble and sent out via email.
The invoices can be paid online using the link in the email or by logging into your MyBramble account and paying it there. (Don't worry I will explain the account creation process in more detail when you get in touch).
